Well.....lets just say it takes a lot to excite me..........
Golf does not do it....I am not that DEAD YET!!!!!!!!!
This book starts off SLOW...BUT I gave it a chance and then realized Gary was just building a baseline of characters to draw from later.
AND WOW does he ever.
Lets just put it this way....I was flying home from Florida and it was a 2 hour plus flight and I had no idea how long I was in the air until the wheels hit the ground on the other end and I found myself with a wet shirt.
Yes it gets that intense and involving........!!!!!!!!!!!

Fails to deliver - Captain Wafer -
This book seems like it should have it all: a dramatic tale of a ship sinking in a storm, sunken treasure, pushing the technological envelope, extensive research and legal battles. And the story of the sinking of the SS Central America is pretty gripping reading. But in the end, it just fails to deliver on that promise. Much of the book felt like the author was saying "well, I've done all this research, so I ought to put it in somewhere". For much of the book, I found myself reading a quarter of the page and skipping to the next page, hoping the story would move on. In the end, I found it a book that I slogged through, not one that pulled me along with the story. I won't be reading it again.

Exciting modern day adventure into the past... - Darrell Johnson - Mavisdale, VA USA
I am an engineer and this turned out to be a fantastic read not only from the "Treasure Hunt" angle but from the problem solving skills of an engineers view. This is a well laid out overview of what it takes to accomplish a Herculean task. It is a good history story, a modern day adventure story, and a tale of challenges at every turn, that were meet with the good ole' American way of hard work and never give up enthusiasm, which paid off in the end.

Entertaining Fiction - James Carragher - New York
This is a fast, easy read. It is also -- I am convinced -- complete fiction. The writing feels like it's fifty years old at least, rather than a mere decade. It's clunky and too often infected with the breathless prose of a bad romance novel. As others who were not captivated by the book have noted, it's all downhill after wonderful picture on the cover.



Manipulative and fake - G. Klein - Michigan
Remember when James Frey fooled Oprah with his fake story, "A Million Little Pieces" and the follow up? I felt so deceived after buying them and spending the time to read them.

I thought that after this famous exploit, publishers were more careful about what they called "Truth"? Apparently not!

I got this book as a gift or I'd never have chosen it. Right off the bat, I knew it was fake, because of the claims of "gentle" wild animal training. The method does not exist, which is a main reason why animal rights groups boycott circuses. Any wild animal you see performing - tigers, elephants, lions, whatever - has been trained with cruelty, pain and fear.

Why was this book not published as a novel? I don't think there is a shred of truth on any page!!

And in a interesting aside, he explains how a global desire for consistently perfect French fries contributes to both damaging monoculture and the genetic engineering necessary to support it.

This book personifies plants and makes all kinds of false statements - Mark D. Jones - Huntsville, AL United States
Plants don't make an evolutionary decision to throw their lot in with humans. Evolution is about the random mutations that occur and the survival of the fittest. This tries to pass itself off as science but what it really does is mislead people into believing that the result was planned.

True that it does encourage you to see things from a different angle, but it doesn't make any valid points in the direction of how plants "plan" their future....



nice story but some facts are fiction! - Brad Polkinghorn -
I'm reluctantly writing this review since, although I'm about to criticize the book/video in question for failing on accuracy/fact, I did enjoy the documentary.

I should make it clear now that I actually haven't read the book, but rather I've watched the documentary of the same name by the same author, which I doubt has much difference in wording and should have identical facts as well as conclusions.

Now to my point:

Although I enjoyed the doco(book?) and agreed with most of its "facts", when it came to discussing Cannabis I was appalled.
An interview with a semi-legal (obviously experienced) cannabis grower discussing cannabis evolution doesn't sound like a great idea to start with, but when that ignoramous's comments are repeated and backed up by other more qualified persons that should know better it becomes dissapointing to say the least.
The topic I'm referring to is the evolutionary change in cannabis of an increase in resin content, which is suggested in the doco to be due to the resins ability to capture pollen and hence fertilize the plant.
Well in fact ALL the pollen captured/trapped by cannabis resin (or any other plants resin to) is totally unable fertilize that plants stigma (female reproductive parts) and hence in any way aid that plants reproductive success.
This is totally logical and 100% successful in demonstration too.

Sadly it seems that an illogical and incorrect theory was put forawrd to explain a plant feature (external resin) who's function is still under debate in the scientifc community (probably more likely a natural fly-paper/bug-killer).

Personally I think it's better not to put forward a theory for the evolution of the sturctural function of a species if that theory's not even logically possible!

This book is well written but a bit strange. Mr. Pollen bases his premise that plants manipulate mankind into shaping their future because of man's 4 desires. My son had to read it for college, so I picked it up. It is quite a "green" book with lots of progressive ideas.

Wonderful book to sit down to from time to time and garner a deeper understanding of the history behind the Apple, Tulip, Cannibas and Potato -- it was like finding out that some of our most 'mundane' plants are actually remarkable. The premise behind the book intrigues too -- that plants can attract or manipulate humans just like hummingbirds or bees. What I felt was the downside to the book was the author's regular repetition of certain assertions, even some of the same stories. As some of the chapters dragged on, I felt like he was saying the same things over and over again, just with different words and a different anecdote. What he said in 300 pages could probably have been said in 200 ... maybe less. Looks like he could have used a stronger editor.

disappointed loyal LP fan - Anne Baker -
I used to think that LP could do no wrong, but am definitely disappointed in this book. In full disclosure, I haven't even left for my trip yet but bought this book mostly for the planning aspect. I was hoping to find some suggested itineraries and good advice about what to cut out if you're short on time. Unfortunately this book is definitely lacking those qualities and is instead basically a list of the cheapest guest houses/ dorm hostels in each town in South East Asia.

The maps are also very confusing and not very helpful. There is one full page map of each country with EVERY possible city/ location marked on it (making it very difficult to find the noteworthy places, especially since almost everywhere has very similar names) and then very zoomed-in close up of individual cities. What's left out is probably what would be most useful-- maps of the various regions showing how these places relate to each other.

Most discouragingly, there is also no advice on what places/ side trips are most worthy of taking. All the other LP guides I've used have had sections including tips on "if you have 2 weeks, go ____ or ____, if you have 3 weeks try ________, for 6 weeks you can fit in ______, etc". I feel like this information is most useful for a book that covers all of SE Asia, rather than just listing every possible location as this one seems to do.

Ptrinted values on guns are inflated and many guns are not even listed. - RJ -
The values printed in this book on many of the antique percussion pistols are way overly inflated. There are no prices on Military 1911s firearms. There is no mention of antique Spanish colonial Miquelet pistols, escopeta, fowlers or even Spanish military guns. Also, many 19th century British military guns are missing altogether. Pretty much everything I collect was not covered, and the few that where were seriously overly inflated. For example, the book says a Colt 1st model dragoon is ,000 in very good condition, ,000 in good condition. If this where the case, I would be selling my entire collection. Overall, I was disappointed in the book, which will only take up space on my bookshelf. Sometimes I wonder if gun dealers print these books in atempt to sell novice collectors guns for more than they would sell for on the open market. Save your money.

Colorado's Fourteeners, 2nd Ed.: From Hikes to Climbs Review

Let's say you know you are going to be in a certain area of Colorado and want to see what fourteeners are close. With the way this book is set up you have to

1. Go to the Colorado map and find a potential mountain, say #21.

2. Go to the peak index and find that #21 = mt. yale.

3. Go to the index in the back to find that mt. yale is on page 122.

4. Go to page 122 to see if you want to do mt. yale.

To make a decission on which one you want to do you have to go through this process for each potential mountain.

It seems the only possible explanation for why the book is set up this way is because they thought it was more important for people to be able to quickly identify a mountains' rank by height than to quickly learn more relavent things like location, difficulty, different routes... But who really cares? How important is it to immediately know that mt. yale is the 21st largest peak in CO and, say, mt. shavano is the 17th? There's only a 30 foot difference between the two.

Anyway, I still gave it 4 stars so obviously I liked the information contained in the book it just blows my mind that an author who specializes in the subject would be so clueless as to how people would use the book.

In addition to an array of routes to chose from, Roach's guide also has the best descriptions on route and potential hazards on routes.Roach's guide is stellar for those interested in climbing in the summer and early fall seasons, when snow isn't an issue.

Unlike Dawson there are few (if any) references to ski-mountaineering, and a limited number of snow routes. For this reason, Roach's guide isn't the greatest for those interested in snow-climbing and ski descents. If snow-climbing and ski-descents are your fancy pick up a copy of Dawson's Guide to Colorado's Fourteeners, Vol. 1: The Northern Peaks or Dawson's Guide to Colorado's Fourteeners, Volume 2, the Southern Peaks




Great guide to the Colorado 14ers - Eric Kassan - Las Vegas, NV USA
This is a great reference to Colorado's 14,000+ foot peaks. The natural grouping of the peaks, the description of all trail heads in each area, and providing numerous routes up each peak are some of the outstanding features. Another is the quality of the maps - in fact they are so good, I wish the author would offer a set of the maps enlarged as a supplemental product. The maps not only clearly depict the routes described with full topographic detail, they are also color coded to show which sections of which routes have specific difficulties (climbing classes).

I had only two issues with this book - the first is that it apparently underestimates difficulty of getting to trail heads with normal cars. The second was that it does not include an overall map of the state showing where the 14ers are located - this is handy if you're in one area and wondering which are closest. Fortunately, both these can be overcome by checking the Internet.

In summary, if one plans to summit more than one Colorado 14er, this book is indispensable.

Gerry Roach has written one of the best guide books I have ever had the pleasure of owning. If you have the basic experience needed for climbing 14'ers this book is extreemly usefull. Complete and well written from approaches to technicial route descriptions. $ 12 bucks. Huh ? Oh the one negitive is you would not want to through this book in your ruck sack it weighs about 5 lbs.

This book is very thought provoking and I am really liking it! I have not yet finished reading it, but I am wondering if all of the facts presented are really facts?? So far, I have found at least one BIG error, I think. This error is on page 112. The text states that "Currently, the production of electricity is one of our largest uses for oil." This is misleading. The largest use of oil, by FAR, is for transportation. So, I am wondering how many of the 'facts' presented in this book are misleading or just plain incorrect. I plan to research many of the things presented in this book.

Our worlds' loss of resources - L. Kingham - Houston, Tx.
This is an excellent book to read. It deals with how our world is rapidly being depleted of sustainable resources to support our current and ever-growing population. I have read hundreds of books and this one is a keeper. A friend loaned me their copy to read and I had to own it. It is an easy read and quite an eye opener to our world situation that is in crisis mode.

I read Conversations with God and in Book 3, Walsch strongly recommended this book. I bought it and couldn't put it down, it was so meaningful. Hartmann wisely avoids talking about political solutions and recommends that we change our world perspective, one of the most difficult things to do yet the most important place to start. One of the most important books on saving the planet that you'll ever read. Share it with everyone you know or better yet buy more of these books and give them to your relatives and friends.
