A Voyage Towards the South Pole and Round the World Volume 2 Overview

On the 6th, being the day after leaving Ulietea, at eleven o'clock a.m., we saw land bearing N.W., which, upon a nearer approach, we found to be a low reef island about four leagues in compass, and of a circular form. It is composed of several small patches connected together by breakers, the largest lying on the N.E. part.

Check Out Bird Songs: 250 North American Birds in Song for $21.90

Bird Songs: 250 North American Birds in Song Review

I'm not a "bird expert" like the previous reviewer who seemed to find the book wanting. He doesn't like the illustrations; I do, and I find the text for each bird interesting. It is wonderful to be able to hear the bird songs and that's really what I wanted out of it--a picture of each bird and its song. I suspect that most people who enjoy birds will find this fascinating. There is no promise of video. This series of audio/video books do not necessarily have both. Even with just audio, this is a very large file which took awhile to download over wi-fi. Video would have made it over the top, and I'm very happy with what is there.

Bird Songs: 250 North American Birds in Song Overview

Drawing from the collection of the world-renowned Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Bird Songs presents the most notable North American birds—including the rediscovered Ivory-billed Woodpecker—in a stunning new format. Renowned bird biologist Les Beletsky provides a succinct description of each of the 250 birds profiled, with an emphasis on their distinctive songs. Lavish full-color illustrations accompany each account, while a sleek, built-in digital audio player holds 250 corresponding songs and calls. In his foreword, North American bird expert and distinguished natural historian Jon L. Dunn shares insights gained from a lifetime of passionate study. Complete with the most up-to-date and scientifically accurate information, Bird Songs is the first book to capture the enchantment of these beautiful birds in words, pictures, and song. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, located in Ithaca, New York, is a nonprofit institution focused on birds and whose mission is to interpret and conserve the earth's biological diversity through research. The Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab is the major source of sound recordings of birds for research, education, conservation, the media, and commercial products.

What a cool book! - Peg S -
I got this book for my sister-in-law but we've all enjoyed it. The text and pictures are great to look at while listening to the birds.

For the Classroom - Wendy -
I bought this book for my Kindergarten classroom and when there is free time - there is a huge rush for this book. Because of the way it addresses two learning modalities, the children have learned to ID so many birds and songs. One boy in my class discovered his talent this year and memorized nearly every bird call in the book and could precisely recite every name. This book is an important piece of my environmental education program and my efforts to foster birding in elementary school. I understand the concern about quickly accessing a call. As I birder,I would recommend adults use another format in the field.

Bird Songs - John R. Weinrich - Newcastle, Maine
After using the Cornell Lab of Ornithology Audio Field Guide( Backyard Birdsong Guide) the Bird Songs book, also using the Lab's audio, is far less successful and useful than I anticipated. The audio song is very short, sometimes with to much background noise and only gives a single variation and no call notes. Navigation through the book is also cumbersome. I expected the Bird Songs book to be more like Donald Kroodsma's Backyard Birdsong Guide and it wasn't.

Natural Resource Economics An Introduction Review

This is an excellent introductory text for the field of environmental economics and is an excellent starting point for anyone attempting to assess the value of the natural environment or understand an existing assessment. Easily digestable material and very good introduction.

Natural Resource Economics An Introduction Overview

People make decisions regarding the use of natural resources every day, from the individual recycling a sheet of paper to governments of large nations creating energy policy. Those decisions ultimately affect people around the world. Their motivation and results are best framed and analyzed using the tools of natural resource economics. Field presents the methods and applications of the discipline in the latest edition of his popular text. The updated book retains its successful structure, first presenting basic economic principles as they apply to natural resource use and then examining the economic issues surrounding individual resources. New material is included on: energy demand and efficiency; nonrenewable resources; individual transferable fishing quotas; water pricing; agricultural cropland programs; and the Endangered Species Act.

Eiger Dreams: Ventures Among Men and Mountains Review

This book is a collection of articles written and previously published by Jon Krakauer (with one chapter a joint written one) and it's worth noting that most of it isn't actually about the Eiger. Each chapter takes a different element of perspective of the different types of climbing or the personalities in climbing and each gives a superb taster, whetting the appetite for more climbing literature.

If you've already read other climbing books there may be some repetition here but for new climbing reader this is a great introduction into the culture and legends of mountaineering and climbing. I really enjoyed it but it is ripe for an update having been written in the late 1980s and it frequently refers to things that should be happening just as the book/article was written. A second edition would be great to tie up these loose ends.

I'm not a climber (it's far too scary for me) but I love reading about the adventures of others. Definitely a collection rather than a progressive story it's still very readable, very interesting and very enjoyable. Recommended.

Eiger Dreams: Ventures Among Men and Mountains Overview

In this collection, Krakauer writes of mountains from the memorable perspective of one who has himself struggled with solo madness to scale Alaska's notorious Devil's Thumb.

Eiger Dreams: Ventures Among Men and Mountains Specifications

No matter what the actual temperature may be, several pages into Eiger Dreams you will begin to shiver. Halfway through you will acquire a new appreciation for your fingers, toes, and the fact that you still have a nose. And by the end of this collection, you'll define some commonly used phrases in an entirely different way. The understated "catch some air" and the whimsical "log some flight time" are climbers' euphemisms for falling, while "crater" refers to what happens when you log some flight time all the way to the ground. "Summiting," the term for reaching the top of a mountain, seems almost colorless in comparison. The various heroes, risk-takers, incompetents, and individualists Krakauer captures are more than colorful, whether they summit or not. The author is more interested in exploring the addiction of risk--the intensity of effort--than mere triumph. There's the mythical minimalist climber, John Gill, whose fame "rests entirely on assents less than thirty feet high," and the Burgess brothers--freewheeling, free-floating English twins who seem to make all the right decisions when it counts, and hence most often fail to reach the top. Of course, they are alive. Over these and other talented climbers hangs a malignant, endlessly creative nature--its foehn winds can make people crazy and its avalanches do far worse. Eiger Dreams is an adrenaline fest for the weary, an overdue examination of a stylish, brave subculture. As one of the heroes Krakauer outlines says of his occupation, "It's sort of like having fun, only different."

It will speak to your soul - Irene M. Cox -
I am a 74 year old lady and I don't climb mountains but this is a delightful book and, if you have an adventurous soul, Jon Krakauer will speak to you. I have also read "Into Thin Air" and "Into the Wild".

Interesting and informative if you enjoy true climbing tales - Nina M. Osier - Augusta, ME USA
What makes men and women want to climb mountains? Or, in the case of one article in this collection, climb boulders? That theme ties "Eiger Dreams" together. Most of the true stories are author Krakauer's first hand accounts, but several deal with other climbers' adventures.

These articles were all written years before Krakauer's fateful 1996 summit of Mount Everest, and anyone who picks the book up expecting another "Into Thin Air" will be disappointed. If you're looking for a fairly varied group of climbing-themed nonfiction tales, though, these collected reprints of Kraukauer's earlier works for periodicals should both interest and inform you. I especially enjoyed the colorful characters, and one of the most colorful turned out to be the very young author-to-be himself.

Good Read - G. Poston - Elko, Nevada
I got this book because I am interested in the subject of mountaineering. After reading a few books about Mt Everest, this collection of mountaineering and related adventure stories is a lot of fun and variety.

Abc's Of Reloading: The Definitive Guide For Novice To Expert Review

I am brand new to reloading. This book is very informative on the subject...almost a little too informative. The book covers gun powder, bullets and brass case history to a point of boredom. Ultimately, you come to realize the need for this information, but it was difficult for me to stay on track while reading about one hundred plus year old, obsolete and no longer available material(s). Once you get past the history portion, the book is great for beginners. Also, it gets into specialized topics for various types of shooting that the reader may be into such as hunting, target shooting, etc.

Excellent - T. James - here there and everywhere
This is THE place to start for the beginner. I haven't purchased my loading kit yet and my copy is already dog eared and highlited cover to cover.

Good starting point - Scott Mullin -
I just finished reading this book, as i am looking to get into reloading. It is a pretty big book with alot of information. It will take awhile to digest the amount of information this book contains. The book gives alot of history, covers the steps in the reload process for pistol, rifle, and shotgun, and stresses safety. A good starting point for anyone who is interested in reloading. I would highly recommend this book.

Very good overview of the reloading process - Michael J. Leibowitz - Boynton Beach, FL USA
This book should be "required" reading for anyone considering reloading ammunition. The book reviews the basics of the equipment needed and provides some very important information every reloader should be aware of. Some of the equipment photographs used in the book may be a bit dated but the information certainly is absolutely current. If you intend to get involved in the hobby of reloading handgun, rifle or shotgun ammunition this is the book to own.

not well written - Rick Dahl - San Lorenzo, CA USA
The lab book needs an errata. There are too many flaws and is not written to the style of the various subjects covered.

Best of a bad crop - A. Wagner -
As an oceanography professor I have used this book in the past and unfortunately use it to this day (at least until I develop my own lab book) and it is honestly the best of a bad crop of oceanography lab books. Of all the lab manuals I have looked at, they fall into two categories: too simple or too complex. This one falls into the latter category. Fortunately, there are enough labs that if you skip some questions I would consider "usable", not great not even good but "usable". If your professor requires this book, get it and photocopy the relevant pages to turn in and then sell the book as complete. You'll get more money back.

Feh - Melissa A. Kranis - Miami
The only reason I got this in all honesty was for my class in Oceanography lab. But the exercises in the book seem to assume that the reader knows more than what the book tells them. Usually a book like this has the answers in the section you read before the exercise, here, that's not the case. You have to find the answers elsewhere. Or make them up and pray the teacher doesn't read it.
